Flatbed Tow Truck

Flatbed tow trucks are great trucks for towing companies. They are able to pick up cars from locations and move them with having the car to touch the ground. The flatbed tow trucks as the name suggests has a flat back that is lowered to the ground level to enable the car to be loaded onto it for towing. Using this type of truck is easier on the car and in some cases protects the car from damage with from road surface debris or from other cars that may get into accidents with a regular tow truck. Some flatbed tow trucks are also equipped with a boom towing mechanism that will allow the one flatbed tow truck to carry two cars at the same time.

There are a large number of different types of trucks available today. They are suited for different types of jobs and most of them are designed with some purpose in mind. Among the popular designs of trucks, the flat bed truck is a one. Among the various types, the flat bed version is useful in the heavy trucking division. This is due to the features that it has which cannot be seen in smaller capacity trucks. These trucks are usually a common sight in construction sites, ports and industrial construction and highly mechanised operations. Flat bed trucks have some distinct advantages and certain intrinsic disadvantages too. Some of its features cannot be used all the time and cause inconveniences.

Let us look into the design of these flat bed trucks. There are basically two different types of trucks. One which has the engine compartment attached to the chassis, the other one is where the loading area can be detached from the engine bay. The flat bed is part of the latter. The flat bed literally means flat loading area. The area of the truck where the load has to be put is totally and completely flat. It does not have any sort of boundary on the side nor does it have any roof. This has certain advantages when used in some places. It allows for easy access to the load. The load can be easily put or removed from the flat bed. This allows for shorter time for loading and unloading. Almost every type of load can be put on a flat bed. The most typically seen type of load which goes up on a flat bed is the container. This is the chief means of transportation in the seas. This is because the containers can be easily fitted on the ship as well as the flat bed trucks for delivery. Hence we see that such trucks are seen the most in ports. Another very important application of the flat bed truck is in the movement of over size loads. This is easy with the wide flat body since there are no restrictions on the sides. This allows for easy movement of such loads. This is very useful in transportation of heavy machinery which would other wise be a tactical nightmare. The flat bed truck has since become an integral part of any construction or an industrial site.

Among the disadvantages, the flat bed truck does not have any safety precautions on the side such as beams. This means that the load is open to tampering and damage. The load has to be fastened to the flat bed very well or else there is a risk of loosing the load during transit which can be extremely dangerous. The over size load also has to be managed well to make sure that they do not pose any threat to others. Even with these minor inconveniences the flat bed truck is an indispensable part of the transport industry.
